The
arts as a medium to teach social, cultural and environmental values?
It really works.
Since May 1999 we have been organizing art activities in and around
Copán Ruinas for thousands of children, first as the Copán Pinta
Foundation, now as Arte Acción Copán Ruinas.
While the Honduran education system is based on memorizing and copying,
our artistic methodology teaches children in a more interactive and
fun way. Our students not only improve their artistic and life building
skills, they also learn to express their ideas and feelings. It might
seem the most common thing to do, but in a country where especially
the lower economic class never learned to speak up, it is essential.
Without creativity there is no imagination. Without imagination there
are no dreams, and without dreams there is no future
Through free classes of painting, photography, drama, murals and many
more disciplines, we teach our students about the environment, children's
rights and how they can play an active role in the improvement of
their community. We teach classes at our headquarters in in Copán
Ruinas, but also at the rural schools, mostly in Maya Chortí villages.
Over the years we have seen an amazing development in our regular
students: the kids who visit our weekly art workshop are no longer
afraid of turning their imagination into a piece of art. Our adolescent
students do not only develop their artistic skills, but also learn
about issues such as gender, sexuality, how to make responsible choices
and how to protect themselves against HIV / AIDS. The children at
rural schools jump up and down in anticipation when they see us coming.
In the town of Copán, both children and adults watch and appreciate
our weekly television program. It is great to be able to say that
over the years we have made a difference for many children in Copán
Ruinas.
But it doesn'tt stop there. Arte Acción Copán Ruinas keeps
on developing new programs, using a multidisciplinary and artistic
methodology for children, adolescents and adults in the region of
Copán Ruinas. In the next few years we hope to open our own cultural
center and attend to more people than ever. Bringing a bit of color
in peoples lives is our goal!
Our mission:
Arte Acción is a Honduran
multidisciplinary association that works towards social inclusion
and strengthening of cultural identity through the promotion and production
of the arts; thus contributing to alternative ways of formation and
expression for children and young adults, which will help generate
creative spaces, social conscience and a culture of peace.
Our vision:
Arte Acción will be a cultural association that is
inclusive, democratic, consolidated and recognized for its methodology
and social-artistic productions, formed by a team of people with ample
artistic formation, affinity and social commitment, with permanent
participation of creative and critical young people who are dedicated
to the institutional sustainability and enabled to multiply the communitarian
artistic activities and contribute to dignify the art and social transformation.
